The Drive Refined: 2025 CX-90 Turbo
Inline-Six Power, RWD Handling, Unmatched Versatility

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 Turbo represents a significant step forward in how performance and luxury can coexist in a three-row SUV. Built on Mazda’s new large vehicle platform with a rear-wheel-drive-based layout, the CX-90 Turbo is engineered to deliver driving dynamics traditionally reserved for premium brands. At the centre of this transformation is a 3.3-litre inline-six turbocharged engine that produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque in the base Turbo trim, or up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque with the high-output version in GT-P and Signature trims when using premium fuel. This longitudinally mounted engine layout contributes to ideal front-rear weight distribution, improving balance and responsiveness in ways that are immediately noticeable behind the wheel.

The engine uses a 48V mild hybrid system known as M-Hybrid Boost. This system supports low-speed acceleration and smooth engine restart without the complexity or weight of a full hybrid setup. It also reduces fuel consumption during city driving and stop-and-go traffic, enhancing both efficiency and smoothness without sacrificing driving pleasure. Paired with a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission that forgoes a traditional torque converter, the drivetrain provides rapid yet refined gear changes, giving the driver a direct and connected feel. Whether accelerating onto the highway or manoeuvring through city traffic, the power delivery remains confident and composed.

Balanced Handling and Ride Confidence

Thanks to the rear-biased all-wheel-drive layout, the CX-90 delivers a planted, composed ride with steering that feels precise and natural. Unlike front-drive-based systems that can understeer under pressure, this layout allows for more dynamic weight transfer and better rear-wheel engagement, especially during spirited driving. The i-Activ AWD system constantly monitors road conditions and adjusts torque distribution to maintain optimal grip, even during inclement weather or uneven surfaces.

Chassis tuning has also been elevated. The CX-90’s multi-link rear suspension provides excellent road isolation without dulling feedback. Mazda’s proprietary Kinematic Posture Control—originally developed for the MX-5—reduces body roll during cornering by applying subtle braking to the inside rear wheel. This enhances stability and maintains cabin comfort for all three rows of passengers. Even when fully loaded with passengers or cargo, the CX-90 maintains its composure with minimal compromise to body control or ride comfort.

Capability Without Compromise

This SUV doesn’t just feel powerful—it backs up its performance with real-world capability. With the high-output turbo engine and proper equipment, the CX-90 can tow up to 5,000 pounds. That’s more than enough for a family trailer, small boat, or recreational equipment. Trailer Stability Assist is built into the system to help mitigate sway, and Mazda’s advanced camera views—including a 360° monitor—make hitching and reversing with a trailer more intuitive and less stressful.

The CX-90 also offers multiple drive modes—Normal, Sport, Off-Road, and Towing—which allow the vehicle to adapt its power delivery and chassis behaviour to suit the situation. Sport mode sharpens throttle response and holds gears longer for more aggressive driving, while Off-Road mode optimizes AWD performance for low-traction conditions like mud or gravel. These settings enhance the flexibility of the CX-90 as not just a family vehicle but a capable adventure companion as well.

Crafted Interior with Driver Focus

The interior of the CX-90 continues Mazda’s push into the premium space, featuring elegant material choices and a clean, horizontal dashboard layout that emphasizes width and openness. The instrument cluster includes a 12.3-inch digital display on upper trims, offering configurable information such as navigation, safety alerts, and performance data. The infotainment screen—also up to 12.3 inches—is mounted high for visibility and operates through both a rotary controller and limited touchscreen functionality when stationary.

What sets the CX-90 apart is how its luxury supports the driving experience. The driving position is low and commanding, providing excellent road visibility. Available quilted Nappa leather, real wood trim, and suede interior panels give a tactile richness, but never distract from the clean ergonomics. The optional second-row captain’s chairs include available ventilation, while the third row offers USB-C ports and dedicated climate controls in higher trims.

While the focus is on performance and layout, Mazda has not overlooked technology. The CX-90 supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Bose 12-speaker audio system is available for an immersive audio experience. Multiple USB ports, a wireless charging pad, and available head-up display ensure seamless connectivity and convenience.

Advanced Safety in Every Trim

Mazda has equipped the CX-90 with a suite of advanced driver assistance systems that come standard on all trims. These include Smart Brake Support with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Warning with Lane-Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and Driver Attention Alert. More advanced features like Traffic Jam Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and a 360° View Monitor with see-through capability are available on upper trims.

These systems are integrated with Mazda’s philosophy of “human-centric design,” meaning they aim to support, not interfere with, the driver’s actions. Rather than constantly interrupting with alerts, the system provides smooth, subtle interventions when needed—helping drivers stay confident and in control.

Built for Driving Enthusiasts and Families Alike

The 2025 CX-90 Turbo offers something few SUVs in its class do: genuine driving enjoyment without giving up on practicality. It combines athletic handling, luxurious materials, and true capability in a way that redefines expectations for what a three-row SUV can be. The use of a mild hybrid inline-six and rear-biased AWD architecture sets it apart from the pack, offering both engagement and efficiency for drivers who care as much about how they get there as where they’re going.
